In March 2020 the Kindergarten had to close, because of the corona pandemic and the associated lockdown. Back then the Kindergarten included 63 children. During the lockdown the kindergarten wasn’t allowed to open. Luckily due to generous donors the teachers still got salaried. From the donated money we were also able to buy basic foods like sugar and corn and hand it to the families of the kindergarten kids.
After a lockdown of 11 months the kindergarten finally reopened. This was a tough time especially for the young children, so we are all relieved and glad that the kindergarten is back open since the first of January 2021.
At the moment 41 kids are enrolled in the Kindergarten. The youngest ones are only two years old. But most of them are three to five years old. Kids older than five are visiting preschool, at the moment there are 13 preschoolers. Through playing, singing and learning the children gain skills that prepare them for school and become a successful student. As you can see in our timetable, we are trying to teach all children as much possible, but at the same time give them enough time to play on their own and with others.
Due to the corona virus, the current location of the Kindergarten and consequently the absent kitchen unfortunately we are not able to prepare a warm lunch for the children. In addition to that the current location does not offer enough classrooms to learn, the playground is limited and there is no bathroom which is suitable for kids.
Because of that reasons we are all looking really forward to the new Kindergarten building. The building is still in process, but the constructors predict the completion at the end of April. All the kids and the staff of the Sunshine Kindergarten are really excited for the current year with all its fun moments of learning, playing, singing and celebrating.
Celebrations:
Pictures of our celebrations are in the gallery.
Independence Day:
On 21st of March was the Independence Day of Namibia. Because of this day we were celebrating with the children. All of them were wearing their traditional clothes and after celebrating in the Kindergarten we went with all of them through the town and were singing the national anthem. Before the children went back home we had a picnic.
Easter:
In the time before Easter we prepared selmade greeting cards for all the parents. The children cut out crosses and stick them on the cards. In addtion to this, the preschool made handicraft Easter baskets.
During the morning devotion we talked with the children about Easter and explained what happened then.
At the last school day before the Easter Days we celebrated with the children, had a picnic in the Kindergarten and gave out the cards and Easter baskets.
Day of the African Child:
The 16th of June is the Day of the African Child.
In memory of the past we eplained to the children how children were treated and what rights they had during the apartheid.
But we did not want to celebrate this day only with the children from our Kindergarten. So we went to the old location to the place where the first Kindergarten in 1959 was opened. We invited all the children who are living in this part of Karibib and can not come to our Kindergarten to be part of us.
We were singing together and sharing our food with them. It was very good to celebrate the day with others who do not have the same possibilities like us.
